Agreements for 4,000 flats to be signed this week, minister says
He confirmed that preparations for the signing are ongoing and that the delay is due to the verification of eligibility and documentation.
Housing Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has stated that agreements with eligible beneficiaries under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme will be signed within the week.
Speaking on the 'Ahaa Forum', a programme by Public Service Media (PSM) that enables public engagement with government officials, Muththalib responded to questions regarding the timeline for signing flat agreements and handing over the units.
He confirmed that preparations for the signing are ongoing and that the delay is due to the verification of eligibility and documentation. Some lists have already been finalised, and administrative arrangements are in progress.
“As mentioned earlier, the agreement will be signed, and the handover of the flats will start in July,” Muththalib said. “I am confident we will begin signing agreements within the next week.”
The current preparations include venue arrangement, staffing, and final verification of applicant documents. Muththalib also noted that some applicants had submitted incorrect documentation to claim city residence while living in rural areas, which has complicated the verification process.
The Gedhoruveriya scheme includes 4,000 flats being constructed in Hulhumale by two Indian companies. Beneficiaries were originally selected by the previous government.
After President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office, a review of the initial list was conducted. A new committee released a revised list in February identifying 1,820 eligible recipients. However, the current government has since decided to revert to the original list, with modifications.
Muththalib previously stated that approximately 700 individuals who do not meet eligibility criteria will be removed from the earlier list before finalising the agreements.
