The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has been established under the Media Regulation Act to oversee media regulation.
The new commission replaces the Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) and the Maldives Media Council (MMC), both of which have been dissolved following the enactment of the legislation.
President Mohamed Muizzu ratified the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill on Thursday, bringing it into force as law. The establishment of the MMBC was made under Article 4 of the Act.
The ratification follows opposition from journalists and media outlets, who had raised concerns about the bill before its passage in Parliament.
