A foreigner serving a jail sentence at Maafushi Prison died on Friday.

Maldives Correctional Service says Aminul Islam, 29, was pronounced dead when taken to the Maafushi health centre after he would not wake up in the morning.

Corrections said that the Bangladeshi national did not wake up for breakfast and was rushed to Maafushi health centre as there was no movement from him despite repeated attempts to wake him up. This was conveyed to the Inspector of Correctional Services, police, human rights commission and the National Integrity Commission.

The doctor declared Aminul Islam dead at 2.10pm. He died of cardiac arrest, according to the health centre.

Aminul Islam was convicted of indecent behaviour and was serving a seven-year sentence. He, according to corrections, was not suffering from any ailment.
