The International Aid Campaign (IAC), which seeks to provide assistance from Maldivians to people in need around the world, has launched a project to construct a mosque in Palestine.

It is the first mosque to be built in Palestine with the help of Maldivians, according to a tweet by the organisation.

The organisation's Director of Media and Public Relations Azhad Ahmed told Atoll Times on Saturday that the inauguration ceremony of the mosque, named Masjid-ul-Guddoos, was held on Tuesday.

The ceremony was attended by senior Gaza officials and residents of the area. According to Azhad, the three-storey Masjid-ul-Guddoos, to be built with a dome and a minaret will:

  • have a capacity of 1,100 worshippers

  • The first floor can be reserved for women; it will have a capacity of 390

  • There will be four toilets

  • Modern light and speaker system will be installed at the mosque, and floors lined with carpet

Since the mosque is being built in a city like Gaza, despite some challenges while carrying out the work, the IAC hopes to complete the construction of the mosque and open it this year, Azhad said.

The construction of the mosque is being carried out by the IAC through a contractor in Gaza.

The mosque in Palestine is funded by the IAC's Tajri fund. The fund is a community fund open for people who wish to build mosques in muslim-majority countries to donate money.

"It's always an open fund. The money donated to Tajri can always be used for the construction of mosques," Said Azhad.

Azhad pointed out that even now, with the help of this fund, the IAC is building mosques in Palestine as well as Kenya, Somalia and Indonesia.

Those willing to donate money to the fund can transfer to:

  • Account Number: 7770000062742

  • Account Name: International Aid Campaign

  • Account label: Sadaga Jharia

The IAC has already made significant contributions in the name of locals to distressed Muslims living in different countries. When Maldivians contribute money to the fund opened by the IAC, they provide essential sustenance and assistance to the needy. These include:

  • Providing food, blankets, etc. required for winter

  • Setting up of water wells

  • Construction of schools for orphans and children from poor families

  • Construction of the mosque
