Bridge construction: Four pillars under construction
During President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's official visit to India in August, construction work on the bridge was inaugurated.

Work is currently underway on four pillars of the Greater Male Connectivity Bridge (GMCP) connecting capital Male, Vilimale, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi, the bridge office announced Thursday.
An official from the bridge office said:

Concrete work on four pillars to be constructed in Male is progressing at a rapid pace.

Concrete work on the pillars to be constructed at sea to begin within this month

Piling work underway for the pillars at sea

Geo technical survey almost complete; the latest data is currently being collected
"Work is going as scheduled. The schedule has not been derailed," the official said.
Schedule of bridge work:

Male-Vilimale section to be completed by July 2023 or latest August 2023

Vilimale-Gulhifalhu section to be completed by December 2023

Thilafushi-Gulhifalhu bridge to be completed by November 2024

GMCP details:

The $530-million project is funded by the Exim Bank of India; $100-million under the Indian grant and the rest ($430-million) under Line of Credit (LOC).

The project includes a 6.7 km long bridge and causeway network that will connect four islands; Male, Villingili, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.

Afcons is the infrastructure arm of Shapoorji Pallonji group, a large conglomerate in India that also has shares with Tata Group.

Governments of India and Maldives signed for the GMCP on 26 August 2021, to be completed within 32 months.
