Final preparations are underway to launch the government's high-speed, nationwide Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry services in Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls.
The planning ministry is currently holding meetings with the councils and institutions of the two atolls regarding the launch of high-speed ferry service in Huvadhoo Atoll, which has been designated as zone five.
During these meetings, island leaders are briefed about how the public transport service will be operated.
It is learnt that the RTL service in Huvadhoo Atoll is expected to start by the end of this month or early next month.
"They said the ferries were being built now. They also said that as soon as the boats are completed, it could start sooner than expected," said Thoriq Afeef, president of Kanduhulhudhoo Council, after a meeting with the planning ministry team.
"The final preparations are underway."
Though the service, which revolutionised the country's islands, will soon be launched in Huvadhoo Atoll, there is still no complete decision on issues such as cost and route of service.
It is learnt that the information will be made public only after these series of meetings with the councils.
The first launch for this phase of RTL was completed earlier this month. MTCC had earlier said that the six ferries needed for the service would be completed by July-end.
The RTL service is now active in:
-
HA. Atoll
-
HDh. Atoll
-
Sh. Atoll
-
Lh. Atoll
MTCC had earlier said that after beginning RTL services in the south, it would once again be extended to other islands in the northern zone.
The company aims to connect the entire country with the ferry system within the next two years.
