Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) president Faris Maumoon has said that the Elections Commission (EC) decision to dissolve the party on the grounds that it did not have enough members shows the extent of corruption in the country and the lack of enforcement of the law.

Former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's son Faris tweeted on Wednesday after the Elections Commission informed the party, led by Gayoom, that it had been dissolved.

He said the decision shows the lack of enforcement of laws in the country and the extent to which corruption has become common and accepted as a norm.

"God willing, we will stand up against this illegal decision and win," Faris said.

In these difficult times, Faris urged party members and supporters to stand up against the decision and come out openly against political corruption, money and influence.

Faris had levelled allegations of corruption, but the party did not disclose the details.

The decision to dissolve the MRM was taken after the party failed to meet the 3,000-member mark given to it.

The decision to dissolve the MRM, which is part of the ruling coalition but is yet to formally endorse President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for a second term, was taken because they could not reach the 3,000-member threshold in the opportunity given.

Recently, seven members in key positions in the government from MRM have announced their exit from the party. It is learnt that some of the party's common members have also parted ways.
