Australia has for the first time opened a high commission in Maldives.
The decision was first announced in February 2022 by then Australian foreign minister Marise Payne.
"Very pleased to announce that Australia has opened an office in Male, Maldives. Australia deeply values our warm and productive relationship with Maldives and looks forward to strengthening our bilateral relationship," the Australian high commission in Colombo, which until now dealt with Maldives, said on Twitter on Wednesday.
Maldivian foreign minister Abdulla Shahid welcomed the opening of the high commission, located at the fifth floor of Hotel Jen in Male.
"I remain assured that the close and cordial relations between Maldives and Australia will reach new heights following this milestone," Shahid said on Twitter.
The newly appointed Australian high commissioner to the Maldives, Paul Stephens, presented his credentials to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in November 2022.
