Expat accused of running prostitution ring arrested

Raids were conducted at four locations in Male and 13 people were arrested in a similar operation last week.

Police have arrested a foreigner for allegedly running a prostitution ring in the Maldives.

A 33-year-old Bangladeshi national was arrested on Thursday and remanded to 15 days in police custody on Friday.

The police accuse MD Faijul Islam, who live in Villimale, of running a prostitution ring.

The police told the court that MD Faijul was allegedly involved in "extensive business of bringing people from abroad and engaging them in prostitution". Evidence has also been submitted to the court to prove this.

Taking note of this and the possibility of influencing witnesses, Judge Ali Nadeem ordered that he be remanded in police custody for 15 days.

A similar operation was carried out by the police two weeks ago. Raids were conducted at four locations in Male and 13 people were arrested.

  • A Bangladeshi woman 

  • Four Thai women

They were produced before the Criminal Court which remanded each of them to 15 days in police custody.
