President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced on Wednesday that the government will provide student loans to all eligible applicants for higher education in the Maldives and abroad.

Speaking at an award ceremony for A-level top-ten Wednesday evening, President Solih said that his administration aims to end the lack of access to higher education due to lack of facilities or having to leave families and go abroad alone.

Stating that the government is committed to providing more opportunities to students who want to pursue higher education abroad through the student loan scheme, he said that this year, a positive change has been made in the loan scheme as well.

The president announced:

  • That 1,225 eligible students will receive the loan this year

  • The higher education ministry will share more details on Thursday

  • With the new amount, the total number of student loans disbursed so far under the student loan scheme launched by the present government will go up to 3,211

"No government has ever provided such opportunities for higher education and training. In the coming days, one of our main focus will be on providing quality education to our children; the expansion of higher education and training," he said.

In February, the government announced the student loan scheme to grant 720 opportunities. However, with this change brought in by the government, another 505 students will get loans.
