Eva's no-confidence motion delayed as Nasheed declines to chair sitting
On the agenda of Tuesday's sitting meeting a no-confidence motion moved against Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla, seeking her removal.
The no-confidence motion against deputy speaker Eva Abdulla failed as speaker Mohamed Nasheed once again recused himself chairing the sitting on Tuesday, extending an existing deadlock over the inability to reconstitute the standing committees.
On the agenda of Tuesday's sitting meeting a no-confidence motion moved against Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla, seeking her removal from the post of deputy speaker. Secretary general Fathimath Niusha, however, issued a directive as soon as the sitting began, saying that the sitting could not proceed as there was no arrangement in place to chair the sitting.
Niusha said she has asked speaker Nasheed on Monday to chair Tuesday's sitting as the parliament's rules of procedure require the speaker to chair the sitting where the deputy speaker's no-confidence is tabled.
"However, in his letter dated June 12, 2023 [Monday], the speaker has informed me of his decision to recuse himself from presiding over the sitting, for which the deputy speaker's no-confidence motion is tabled under Article 205(b) of the rules of procedure, until a vote is taken on the no-confidence motion filed against the speaker," she said.
"Therefore, I would like to inform the honourable members that it is not possible to continue today's session unless a decision is taken on the chair of today's sitting."
Two no-confidence motions have been submitted to the parliament, signed by a number of MDP lawmakers, seeking the removal of Nasheed as speaker and Eva as deputy speaker.
-
The 14-day notice sent to Eva in the case expired on Sunday and the parliament secretariat removed the motion from Sunday’s agenda as the parliamentary standing committees had not been constituted
-
On the same day, Nasheed informed the parliament that he was no longer willing to chair sittings until a decision was taken on the no-confidence motion against him
-
MDP leader Mohamed Aslam has earlier said that Nasheed should not chair sittings as the no-confidence motion was moved with a huge mandate from MDP's parliamentary group
-
In a message to the parliament's official WhatsApp group on Sunday evening, Nasheed said that the best thing for MDP would be to withdraw Eva's motion and file her confidence motion again after the no-confidence motion against him is voted on
-
Although the parties still have not agreed on the formation of committees, Eva's motion has been placed on the agenda for Tuesday’s sitting
