Majority of the parliament's government oversight committee, one of the standing committees of the parliament, should be given to opposition, MNP president and its presidential candidate Mohammed Nazim said on Wednesday.

He was speaking at a party camp rally held on Wednesday to discuss the issue of the change in the number of members representing the parties in parliament.

Nazim, who also represents Dhangethi constituency in parliament, said that parliament is a place to hold the government accountable.

"We don't want to stay in this deadlock. We want parliament to be a place where the government is held accountable," Nazim said.

Reconstituting committees has stalled as parties cannot reach an agreement. Pointing to that, he said the parties should compromise and follow global best practices to end the deadlock in parliament.

Nazim said that since the parliament is a place to hold the government accountable, the best practice in the world is to give the majority of the parliamentary committees to the opposition. The committees are, according to Nazim:

  • Government oversight committee

  • Public finance committee

"This is how it should be allocated,  and this is the way to hold the government accountable, but we don’t see that happening," Nazim said.
