No option but for army to take over governance, says MP Saeed

"I don't believe there is any option now but for the army to come out and take over this country," Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed said.

The situation in the country has fallen to the point where the army has to take over the country, the opposition PPM-PNC coalition said on Wednesday.

The opposition PPM-PNC coalition's parliamentary group (PG) held a press conference at the parliament on Wednesday.

"I don't believe there is any option now but for the army to come out and take over this country," Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed said.

There are many reasons behind this, he said, highlighting some of them:

  • The opposition believes that part of the country’s territorial waters have been sold off

  • On a day when the opposition went to the President’s Office to meet President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Chief of Staff Ali Zahir came out and said, "We will do whatever we want”

  • There is extreme intimidation and insults from various government forces

  • The government has influenced the judiciary to prolong the appeal of former President Abdullah Yameen in the High Court while expediting his trials at the lower court

  • The government has asked independent institutions such as the HRCM not to investigate the cases filed by the opposition

  • The government has orchestrated a deadlock in the parliament

“[Parliament] is being locked up directly on the orders of the president to send MDP MPs to the islands to campaign, to distribute the money received for the campaign,” Saeed said.

"When we fall to this level, dear people, we have to tell you. This country can no longer be saved from this MDP government. Every time these people get power, they will sell out a large part of the country and enslave us”.

The opposition PPM-PNC coalition believes that the solution to the deadlock in parliament is to withdraw one of the no-confidence motions filed by the ruling MDP against speaker Mohammed Nasheed and deputy speaker Eva Abdulla. Nasheed also believes so.

However, the MDP says it has no intention of withdrawing any motion and there is no obstacle to Nasheed chairing parliament sittings.
