Opposition leader Abdulla Yameen on Tuesday described this year's National Day as a "heartbreaking" event, as he continued with his criticism of the government's pro-India policies.

National Day is celebrated on the first day of Rabi' al-Awwal from the Islamic calendar to commemorate the independence struggle waged by national hero Boduthakurufaanu from the hands of the Portuguese. This is the 76th National Day celebrations in the Maldives.

In a tweet, Yameen said that although this is a day to celebrate Boduthakurufaanu's noble war for the country's independence, his eyes are filled with "tears of deep emotions".

Yameen said that national day greetings have to be conveyed with the "heartbreak" of "gloomy, dangerous days".

Opposition believes that the foreign policy of the current administration has hampered the independence of the Maldives.

The opposition has launched an India Out campaign alleging that confidential agreements have been signed with India to allow Indian boots on the ground.

However, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has declared the campaign a threat to national security and ordered concerned authorities to crack down on India Out activities.
