One of the most important achievements of his term is ensuring the independence of the courts, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Sunday.
Speaking at the Sh. Noomara stop in his campaign in the atoll, the president said that one of the most important things that has been done in the last five years is reinstating the rule of law. Recalling the "fear-filled" days of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration, the president said that through his government's work, the judiciary has been given full autonomy and the courts have been given full freedom.
"Influence on the judiciary has been brought to an end. The courts have now been given full independence," he said.
The president said his government is working to get out of political turmoil and provide basic services to the people. The president said he was confident that the promises would be fulfilled for the next five years with the coalition of the united parties.
"My aim is to fulfil the wishes of the people. The two parties with me, Adhaalath and MDA, believe in the principles I have mentioned. With that coalition, we will be able to fulfil the promises made," he said.
The president said the people of Noomara have been very brave and have made sacrifices in achieving the freedom we are seeing now. The president said Noomara has always given a large majority to the MDP, with 74% of the islanders voting for the MDP in the last presidential election.
The president said he would work without discrimination to bring development to the most isolated and marginalised island in the north of Male.
In addition, the president assured that the stalled projects in the island will be resumed within the next month.
“I will continue to work to bring development to such isolated islands in the future without discrimination,” he said.
The president noted that the list of demands of Noomara is long and assured that all of them will be fulfilled. The president said that the uninhabited island near Noomara, called Neu, which had been given on lease to a private party, would be made available to the island. The work is being done with the council, he said.
