Presidential nominations to open from July 22 to August 7
With the recent changes in the law, candidates will get 14 days instead of the previous 10 days or until August 7 to file their nominations.
Elections Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced that the filing of nominations for the September 9 elections will open from July 23 till August 7.
Speaking at a press conference held at the election headquarters in Dharubaaruge on Wednesday, Elections Commission chairman Fuad Taufeeq said the election will be formally announced on July 22, with nominations accepted from July 23. With the recent changes in the law, candidates will get 14 days instead of the previous 10 days or until August 7 to file their nominations, he added.
Fuaq urged those who want to contest the elections to be ready to file their nomination as soon as the window is open. Care should also be taken to get relevant documents like criminal record sheets, he said.
According to Fuad, re-registration for those who wish to vote in a place other than their registered island will open:
-
From July 16 to August 5
-
Online re-registration will be available from July 16-29
-
Re-registration can be done by form only from July 30 to August 5
The EC had initially decided to cancel the re-registrations for the last election and make it mandatory for everyone to re-register for the presidential election. However, the commission has since decided to allow people who have registered to vote in Male in the last council elections to vote without having to re-register again.
