Ilyas secures Democrats pres ticket with 94% votes

MP Ilyas Labeeb secured the presidential ticket of The Democrats party with 94% votes in a referendum held on Friday.
Ilyas became the sole contender for the party's presidential ticket when the party opened nominations for its internal primary election.
The party's charter dictates that a referendum be held in case of a single candidate in the primary. The candidate is required to secure at least 10% of the votes.
Democrats said Ilyas won nearly 95% of the vote in the nationwide presidential primary held from 2-6 pm on Friday.

Nominations for the September 9 presidential election are open till 2pm on August 7.
Jumhooree Party (JP) leader and presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim, The Democrats' founder Mohamed Nasheed and MNP presidential candidate Mohamed Nazim have agreed to field a common candidate if the main opposition PPM and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's MRM agree.
