Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed on Saturday that norovirus is responsible for the current outbreak of diarrhoea in Male.
Although an increasing number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting has been observed for the past two weeks, cases have spiked since Thursday evening after the large gatherings and events held to mark the Independence Day.
In a series of tweets, HPA said the outbreak is linked to a fast-spreading norovirus, which can spread quickly among crowds and in closed spaces.
The agency advises people to take precautions like hand washing with soap, and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
The opening of Independence Day carnival event at the Hulhumale Central Park has also been postponed due to the spread of diarrhoea and vomiting.
