Even beyond climate change policy, The Democrats' detailed manifesto is divided into five sections, setting out policy for various areas.
With a vision to shape Maldives' development and economy on sustainable, renewable resources and protect natural resources and the environment, The Democrats' manifesto has devoted a chapter to environment and climate change.
The Democrats' candidate, Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb, is the first presidential candidate to include a policy on environment and climate change in his manifesto.
The Democrats launched Ilyas' 'Personal Prosperity, a Dignified Life' manifesto at a special rally in Sultan Park on Tuesday.
The 118-page manifesto promises under the 'Environment and Climate Change' policy:
-
Conversion of electricity generation for residential and commercial purposes to renewable energy sources
-
Facilitate listing of more than one island to bring the required amount of renewable energy to be profitable
-
Facilitate access to financial and technical assistance from the government and foreign aid for renewable energy development
-
To provide financial and technical resources to convert water and sewerage systems in all islands of Maldives to upgradeable networks in anticipation of population growth rates and changes in population needs
-
Strengthen the collection system of non-perishable waste in rural areas and facilitate the generation of electricity and fodder from waste
-
Design regulations to ensure that construction maintains low electricity costs, climate resilience and other sustainability standards, and introduce a program that provides an incentive package for constructors who maintain those standards
-
In addition to international efforts to protect Maldives's natural resources and protected areas and save Maldivians from the dangers of climate change, identify the necessary preparations in Maldives and shape efforts in that direction
-
To change the fact that infrastructure such as ports and roads are always in need of upgrades due to the natural environment of rural areas, and to take into account climate adaptation innovations in the planning and implementation of such projects
