In addition to providing housing to more than 25,000 families living in Male during the five years of The Democrats rule, the party's presidential candidate Ilyas Labeeb has proposed to include K. Thulusdhoo, Huraa and Himmafushi within the area considered as the Greater Male area.
The Greater Male Region is now considered to include Male, Villimale and Hulhumale, as well as the industrial islands of Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu. In addition, the Giravaru lagoon, which is being developed by the government as a residential city, has also been included in the Male area.
The Democrats' Veshifahi Male Policy was launched at a special rally at the surf point area of Male on Sunday.
In The Democrats' policy, the reason for adding the three islands to the Male region is:
-
It is estimated that MVR 4.8 billion will be spent on dredging the lagoons of Gulhifalhu and Giravarufalhu and providing all services
-
It is not feasible to spend another 10-15 years to fix the city’s housing crisis; it is a necessity that must be fulfilled immediately
The policy cites Hulhumale as an example, saying that the Hulhumale project took 10-15 years to acquire the land and build other basic services and facilities required to start living.
In that time period, many people will marry, have children and families will grow; congestion will increase, and poverty will increase.
Therefore, under The Democrats' policy:
-
More than 25,000 families in the city will be provided with housing within five years of implementation of the policy
-
For those who wish to move out of the city, housing and settlement allowance will be provided
-
Those who have received land in Villimale and want to build more than six floors will be given the opportunity to move to Hulhumale
-
The owners of the houses in the most crowded areas in the city will be given land or flats after fair compensation
The purpose of giving flats is to provide affordable housing to people who have to live in the city's corners, concrete lanes, according to The Democrats' policy. This includes emptying overcrowded and congested blocks in the city.
The Democrats' policy is divided into two phases. In the first phase, some of the congested areas in the city will be vacated. They include:
-
110, 351, 355, 356 and 360 blocks will be vacated and 15-storey flat buildings will be constructed on the sites; 202,684 acres
-
3,928 flats will be built in the areas at an estimated cost of MVR 3.9 billion
-
The work will be completed within the first 18 months
-
The 10 most congested quarters in the city will be identified and evacuated; Everyone over the age of 18 belonging to the areas will be given a separate flat and not less than 1,000 acres of land for each plot of land in the areas
-
In addition to the dilapidated buildings in the areas, compensation will also be paid for the small plots of land distributed; it is estimated to cost more than MVR 12 billion
Under the second phase of this policy:
-
Construction of 5,147 two-bedroom and three-bedroom flats in 10 areas vacated in the first phase; estimated to cost MVR 8 billion
-
Council housing will be introduced through the city council for families who do not have adequate income to afford adequate housing
-
Construction of a total of 2,000 two-bedroom and three-bedroom flats for the city council's housing programme; estimated to cost MVR 2.3 billion
In addition, the policy will limit the number of vehicles imported into the city while modernising the roads.
