President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Monday that the salaries of employees in state agencies whose salaries have not been revised will be increased from January.

The president is campaigning for the September 9 presidential election in Baa atoll. Speaking to the people of Thulhaadhoo, the president said the salaries of the state employees will be increased by up to 40%.

The government has already increased the salaries of teachers, doctors and nurses, as well as university staff and health workers.

Under the government’s pay harmonisation policy, salaries of all employees of the judiciary, police, army, councils, correctional service, customs and civil service, including those who are not currently paid a fixed salary such as Imams, will be increased from next year.

“Our goal is to bring about a positive change in the salaries of all employees working in all these sectors from January next year,” he said.

  • With this, police constable rank employees who currently earn MVR 11,000 will receive a salary of MVR 15,400 per month

  • On average, everyone's salary will increase by 40%

The president said the change would positively affect the salaries of 44,281 people in state institutions and agencies.

"This is not something I'm just saying here. It's calculated and tabled and detailed," he said.

"I think with this change, there will be a positive change for families and lifestyles. Every family will hopefully become a prosperous family," he said.

Further details will be announced in the near future, the president said.

"This is not something that any government has done. It is not something that any government has intended to do. They want to rule by force with the people in their fists," he said.
