Faris acknowledges suffering in Gayoom's rule; says sorry for earlier remarks
In an interview with an online newspaper this week, Faris denied that his father did not order torture during his 30-year rule.
Independent presidential candidate Faris Maumoon on Tuesday apologised for his remarks, saying he accepts the fact that some people suffered injuries and grief during the rule of his father, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
In an interview with an online newspaper this week, Faris denied that his father did not order torture during his 30-year rule. Faris said that people were not tortured at the behest of Maumoon and that it was not an oppressive regime.
With that, there was a lot of outrage on social media. Different people began to talk about the injuries they or their families had suffered.
Faris apologised to his remarks in a video posted on X Tuesday evening. Faris admitted that his denial of the suffering several people endured in Maumoon's regime had added to their continued grief.
“I apologize for that too,” he said.
"I will admit that some people suffered torture during President Maumoon's rule. And I will not deny that some people are still in this grief. So, I am extremely sorry for this."
According to Faris:
-
The goal is to bring solace to all of them under his rule
-
In a government under his watch, he will make it his personal responsibility to ensure that nothing like that happens
