Public holiday over election extends to Monday

Earlier, the president had declared Sunday a public holiday due to the election on Saturday.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has declared Monday, September 11, a government holiday.

The announcement was made through an official statement issued by the President's Office on Sunday.

According to the President's Office, the president made the decision considering that officials from government offices and institutions are still involved in matters related to the presidential election held on Saturday. 

Earlier, the president had declared Sunday a public holiday due to the election on Saturday. 

Provisional results of Saturday's presidential election show main opposition PPM-PNC's Dr Mohamed Muizz leading the polls with 46%, while President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih secured 39%. 

To win outright, a candidate needs more than 50% of the votes. From the preliminary results, it is certain that a runoff between the top two contenders will take place on September 30.
