Health, education staff to receive higher salaries, benefits

The President's Office has asked the National Pay Commission and the Civil Service Commission to take necessary steps to bring about the changes.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decided on Wednesday to make some major changes to the health and education sector pay frameworks in a bid to provide additional salaries and allowances.

Presidential spokesperson Miuvan Mohamed said the president made the changes after some employees expressed concerns about the recent changes in the salary structure. They include:

  • Complaints received from nurses and medical officers regarding the change in the salaries of health workers

  • The case filed by the professional employees of the education sector regarding the standard of allowance when they retire from public service

  • A petition signed by 862 education professionals and teachers was submitted over the 'Standard for Retirement Benefits', which came into force last year

According to the changes brought by the president:

  • 1-

    Medical officers and nurses will be entitled to 'Attendance Allowance' for working on official holidays

  • 2-

    The change came after doctors and nurses complained about not getting the allowance

  • 3-

    Designating 'non-clinical' nurses working in health care facilities to 'clinical' nurses

  • 4-

    Among the nurses whose positions will be demoted under the new structure based on their work experience, the nurses whose job responsibilities will not change will be retained in their previous positions. The Pay Commission will require the nurses to study further

  • 5-

    In addition, extend the grace period of nurses who have been given grace period to study from 2018 to 2026

  • 6-

    Resolve the issues faced by nine nurses who had problems migrating to the new structure

  • 7-

    Extend the option of choosing the allowance until January 2024, if any employee is required to be paid a retirement allowance within a maximum of 18 months from the date of migration to the state pay framework

The President's Office has asked the National Pay Commission and the Civil Service Commission to take necessary steps to bring about the changes. The decisions will also solve the problems faced by nurses, doctors, teachers and education professionals, Miuvan said.
