Opposition coalition candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz said on Monday that the current government has not paid attention to delivering justice for the May 6, 2021, attack on The Democrats founder and speaker of parliament Mohamed Nasheed, and that justice will be delivered in a PPM-PNC government.

Speaking at a rally in Maafannu North constituency on Monday evening, Muizz reiterated that he would establish a just government and assured that justice would be delivered to everyone.

"I just want to mention the brutal, aggressive attack on the Democrats’ President Nasheed in the middle of the city on Majeedhee Magu. He has not been given justice for that attack. The government has not paid due attention to it," Muizz said.

"We are coming to establish a just government. Hopefully he [Nasheed] will get justice in a government we establish."

Muizz reiterated that peace, justice and fairness will come to Maldives and he will implement them to the fullest extent in his government.

Results of the September 9 election show main opposition PPM-PNC's Dr Mohamed Muizz leading the polls with 46%, while President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih secured 39%.

To win outright, a candidate needs more than 50% of the votes. A runoff between the top two contenders will take place on September 30.

The Democrats, whose candidate MP Ilyas Labeeb finished third in the first round of the presidential election September 9 with about 15,000 votes, has conditioned a referendum on governance system on September 25 -- four days before the presidential runoff on September 30 -- for a coalition.

Talks over a runoff coalition with jailed opposition leader, former president Abdulla Yameen's PPM-PNC have stalled as they refused to sign an agreement on the referendum.

Ruling MDP has offered a counter proposal to hold a referendum on changing the system of governance from presidential to parliamentary after the presidential election.
