Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed has been dismissed from his position as Deputy Managing Director of the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), following more than six months of suspension with pay in connection to an ongoing corruption investigation.
Fazeel was initially suspended on 19 December last year after being accused of submitting a forged agreement. At the time of the alleged incident, his brother, Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, was serving as the Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The matter remains under investigation by the Maldives Police Service.
MWSC’s board of directors has now formally decided to remove Fazeel from his position, effective immediately. In a statement issued by the company, it said the decision was taken in the interest of protecting the company.
MWSC noted that it was not in the company’s interest to continue employing Fazeel in a senior role while he remained under suspension with salary.
