President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday decided to pay a 35% allowance to local council employees from next month.
The President's Office said that the president took the decision after taking into account the dissatisfaction among the council staff and the complaints received from them as the employees of the councils were not part of the 35% allowance given to employees in government ministries since May.
The President’s Office said the president believes that the exemption of council employees from the allowance is a major obstacle to their efforts to provide services closest to the people through decentralisation.
"Since the councils are providers of many services and the pay gap between the civil servants of the state and the civil servants of the councils has widened by the allowance of 35%, it has been decided that this 35% allowance will be provided to the employees of the councils as well with effect from October 1, 2023," the President’s Office said in a statement.
