Major hike in overseas voters in pres runoff

The total number of registered voters abroad is 6,222.

The number of people registered to vote abroad in the upcoming presidential runoff has more than doubled as compared to the first round of the election, according to the Elections Commission data. 

The Elections Commission (EC) on Monday gazetted the final list of registered voters in the second round.

The list shows that the number of registered voters in the nine polling stations to be set up abroad for the second round of the election as:

    UAE, Abu Dhabi-1: 442 people

  • 2-

    India, Trivandrum-1: 608 people

  • 3-

    India, Trivandrum-2: 455 people

  • 4-

    Sri Lanka, Colombo-1: 670 people

  • 5-

    Sri Lanka, Colombo-2: 640 people

  • 6-

    Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur-1: 915 people

  • 7-

    Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur-2: 780 people

  • 8-

    Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur-3: 825 people

  • 9-

    United Kingdom, London-1: 887 people

Therefore, the total number of registered voters abroad is 6,222.

  • 3,356 more voters registered than the first round

  • A total of 2,866 people abroad had registered to vote in the first round

A total of seven ballot boxes had been set up abroad for the first round of voting. However, due to the high turnout, nine polling stations will be set up abroad for the second round. The boxes added were in Trivandrum, India and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The second round of the election coincides with holidays, which is believed to be the reason why more people registered to vote in the second round. In addition, some people who did not vote in the first round have also registered to vote in the second round.

The Elections Commission received more than 50,000 forms for re-registration in the second round of the presidential election, of which more than 11,000 forms have been invalidated. Most forms were invalidated because:

  • Live photos were not uploaded when the form was submitted online

  • Both sides of the ID card was not uploaded
