Elections Commission on Wednesday suspended two election officials for insulting two foreign observers monitoring Saturday's presidential election.
The Elections Commission wrote on X on Wednesday evening that a Maldivian observer and a representative from a party were suspended for violating the code of conduct. However, the commission did not identify the party.
According to the commission:
-
They were suspended from the second round of the election and two upcoming major elections
-
In those elections, they cannot act as observer, monitor, candidate representative, or EC official can act
The commission did not give much details about the incident, but a video where some observers were being insulted was posted on social media on the day of the polls. The video suggests that they belong to the PPM-PNC.
As can be seen in the video:
-
They were insulted for being Indian
-
They were bullied by saying that there they were trying to influence the vote and they were going very close to the polling booth
The commission said it had given the party the change to replace the suspended officials with two others, an observer and a representative.
