As the opposition, MDP will continue to responsibly hold the government accountable, the outgoing ruling party's chairman Fayyaz Ismail said Sunday.

Opposition PPM-PNC candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz defeated incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the second round of the presidential election held on Saturday, according to provisional results.

With all 584 ballot boxes now counted, Muizz leads the polls with 126,499 votes or 53,54%, while President Solih received 108,735 or 46.22% votes.

In a post on X following the results, Fayyaz congratulated Muizz and his running mate Hussein Mohamed Latheef.

"As the opposition, MDP will continue to responsibly hold the government accountable and ensure the protection of democratic principles in the Maldives," the post read.

President Solih has also conceded defeat, and congratulated Muizz for his victory.

Elections Commission estimate that more than 86% of the eligible voters cast their ballots.
