After a four-month hiatus, the standing committees of the parliament were reconstituted on Wednesday.

Twelve members of MDP, which has a majority in parliament, left the party last May, causing a major change in the representation of political parties in the parliament.

The MDP, which still has a clear majority in the Parliament, will have a majority in all committees. With that, the first meeting of some committees was held on Wednesday.

There are 17 standing committees in the parliament. Five committees have met so far on Wednesday and their chairpersons and vice-chairpersons have been appointed.

Important committees include, Finance Committee:

  • Kinbidhoo MP Mohammed Nashiz remains as the chairman of the committee

  • MDP MP from Dhandhoo, Yaugoob Abdulla, has been appointed as the vice-chair of the committee. Ilyas Labeeb, Hulhudhoo MP (The Democrats), was appointed as the vice-chair of the committee before.

Economic Committee:

  • The chairman is MDP Alifushi MP Mohammed Rasheed Hussain

  • Milandhoo MDP Member Ali Riza was appointed as the Vice-Chairman. The committee was previously vice-chaired by The Democrats Maafannu Central MP Ibrahim Rasheed.

Other Committees:

  • Committee on State-Owned Companies (SOE Committee): MP from Kendhikulhudhoo constituency, Ahmed Easa; formerly chaired by Ilyas Labeeb

  • General Committee: Abdul Ghany Abdul Hakeem, MP from Kurendhoo constituency; previously chaired by Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef of The Democrats.

  • Regulation Committee: MDA MP from Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir; he has previously chaired the committee

  • National Development and Heritage Committee: MP from Baarah, Ahmed Abdulla, has been appointed as the chair of the committee now, as he was before.

It is noteworthy that earlier, after the election of the 19th parliament, when the committees were formed, all the committees except the Regulation Review Committee were chaired by MDP members. Some of the chairmen at the time are now Democrats.

The Judiciary Committee is expected to change as the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons were appointed on Wednesday. The committee was previously chaired by The Democrats MP Imthiyaz Fahumy.

The remaining committees are not expected to change much.
