President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the new administration will focus on addressing the issue of shortage of teachers in the Maldives.

In an address on the occasion of International Teachers' Day, the President-elect highlighted some of the problems faced by teachers and students.

He mentioned two things:

  • Decrease in the number of teachers in Maldives

  • The question of whether graduates have the skills needed for the country

“Hopefully, both of these issues will be given high priority by the government we form,” Muizzu said in his address.

Additional things he will do for teachers include:

  • Take stronger measures and refresh teachers

  • Special attention should be paid to teachers' health and policies should be formulated to balance working hours and personal lives

  • Shape the administrative structure of teachers to facilitate the maintenance of the dignity of their work

  • Enhancing the respect and honor of teachers in society

In addition, the curriculum will be reshaped to instill certain characteristics in the students, he said. The President-elect mentioned the following characteristics:

  • The sharpness and intelligence that a student of this century should have

  • Capability and behavior

  • Respect for social standards and patriotism

Congratulating the teachers on the occasion, Muizzu described them as lights that dispel darkness from the country and a level that can straighten any crooked course.

“[They are] carriages in charge of the difficult journey of leading future generations in the right direction,” he said.
