A group operating in Indonesia has been added to the list of terrorist groups designated by Maldives.

Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) has been added to the list of terrorist groups and war zones, according to the revised list released by the President's Office on Monday. This is not a group that has been included in this list before.

JAD was listed as a terrorist organisation by the UN Security Council on 4 March 2020.

According to the Security Council summary on the JAD at the time:

  • JAD was established in 2015 in Indonesia; this is the largest in the ISIL network operating in Indonesia

  • It works with about 24 extremist operating in Indonesia

  • The JAD has been known to sell and supply weapons to the IS branch in Iraq and recruit people for IS activities

  • Since the establishment of the JAD, acts of terrorism have been committed in various parts of Indonesia

This time the list included all of Syria as a war zone. All territories in Syria have been listed since October 31, 2019.

Under the Anti-Terrorism Act, prohibited activities include supporting a group designated as terrorist groups, sharing documents of such a group, joining such a group, and also traveling to war zones and participating in a war abroad.

Under the Act, the president will determine the groups considered to be terrorist groups in consultation with the National Security Council. The president also has the power to make additions to the list.
