Police have announced that a post-mortem will be conducted on a 48-year-old man who died in custody on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ahmed Afrah of G. Zamia. He had been arrested last Friday.
A police media officer confirmed on Monday that the decision was taken to conduct a post-mortem as part of ongoing investigations. No further details were provided.
According to police, Afrah was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) at 5:50am on Sunday, where he was pronounced dead.
The service said the case is being investigated by the Major Crime Investigation Department.
In addition, the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC) have been informed of the incident.
Police also stated that the Professional Standards Command is carrying out an internal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.
