Undocumented worker arrested for kidnapping, torturing man

He is believed to have participated in the crime with others and committed alleged acts of violence against the victim

A foreigner has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and torturing a man in collaboration with others.

Mohammad Arif Hosoin, 37, of Bangladesh, was arrested and produced before the Criminal Court on Friday. He was ordered to be remanded in police custody for 15 days.

Police have not yet released details of the incident.

According to his arrest warrant, police have presented evidence to the court that he committed the crime. According to the statements submitted, the victim's statement and photographs taken from the scene of the incident, it is believed that he kidnapped a person, threatened and committed violent acts.

Judge Ali Nadeem ordered his remand because he appeared to be a danger to society. The judge said:

  • He is believed to have participated in the crime with others and committed alleged acts of violence against the victim

  • He is an undocumented migrant worker in Maldives and there is a possibility of escape

A 35-year-old Maldivian man was also arrested on Friday on charges of assault and robbery.

He was also remanded in custody for 15 days on Friday. According to the remand order, police have submitted evidence against him. Apart from photographs taken from the scene, CCTV footage and bank statements, the victim's statement and photographs showing the injuries he suffered have also been submitted to the court.
