President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu's office on Tuesday called on the government not to hand over flats to the list of recipients under the Gedhoruveriya scheme, threatening to take action against those who have tried to give flats unfairly.
At a press conference in M. Dhimyath on Tuesday, transitional spokesperson Mohamed Firzul Abdullah Haleel spoke about the concerns raised by the government on the flat list released last Saturday. As such, he said:
-
The office of the president-elect has been receiving many complaints about the list and the way points have been awarded to the recipients of the 4,000 flats currently under construction; In addition, public concerns about the list are also surfacing on social media
-
The main complaint is about the way points have been given in determining the 4,000 flat recipients or those who should be given priority and the way the whole process has been conducted
-
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has also ordered a halt on the handover of flats
“The call and also request of the president-elect is that when there are so many concerns and so many complaints about this work, there is no confidence in this whole process during this [transitional] period to rush through it because it will lead to a lot of problems,” Firzul said.
Noting that the new government has about nine days to take over, Firzul said Muizzu asked to delay the process instead of handing over the flat or flat registration certificate in a hurry.
"Stop it and allow the new government to carry out the work properly. That is the call and request of the President-elect," he said.
Muizzu has earlier said that the flats to be given on the flat list will be available under his government. Firzul said on Tuesday that the stand of the President-elect is still the same and it has not changed.
"He will still maintain that stand. [However], it should be noted that the complaints that are being heard now are mainly about irregularities or unfair practices," Firzul explained.
He also said, "even if he [the president-elect] has done something irregular and unfair, he will not be removed from the list.
In addition, Firzul said that if things were done outside the rules, "action could also be taken against those who compiled the list".
“There will be an opportunity to take action within the legal framework, within the established institutions and within order,” Firzul said.
"This move will not be taken in a politically motivated manner. There will be no room for that”..
Firzul added:
-
The president-elect believes that it is "unfair" to remain silent or to ignore injustice
-
If flats have been given to ineligible people outside the rules and unfairly, action should be taken against them
