The MDP, which has a majority in Parliament, has said that it will protest if President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu is sworn in with Nasheed presiding as Speaker.

Hulhumale MP Ali Niyaz posted on X that MDP would go on a protest after Nasheed also posted that MDP's plan to "stop" Muizzu's swearing-in ceremony had failed.

"With the Supreme Court’s verdict today, if the Speaker that will be presiding over the swearing-in ceremony is one that does not have the confidence of MPs, the MDP will protest against it," he explained.

Ali Niyaz said the party's parliamentary group would decide the details of the protest at the swearing-in ceremony on November 17.

The no-confidence motion against the Speaker of Parliament has not been taken up for more than a week as the Deputy Speaker has been on leave. The MDP believes that no other work can be done in the parliament without deciding the issue.

  • So the MDP filed the case in the Supreme Court

  • The court on Thursday ruled that the presidency of the case could be taken over by another member in the absence of the Deputy Speaker

  • The MDP has previously said it would not accept the swearing-in ceremony if Nasheed presides over it

If the President-elect is sworn in without conducting a vote of no confidence in Nasheed and he presides over it, the MDP has already said it will not accept the swearing-in ceremony. At a press conference last month, the party's parliamentary group's leader Mohammed Aslam said that if Muizzu's swearing-in ceremony is held under Nasheed's watch, MDP members may not attend the ceremony.
