The MDP has started collecting signatures for a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah.

Eva has drawn the ire of the party members over what transpired in Sunday’s parliament session and a senior party member confirmed to Atoll Times that they have already started seeking signatures to remove her.

It is learned that the MDP parliamentary group has not yet decided on the motion of no confidence in Eva.

Villufushi MP Hassan Afeef presided over the meeting held at 9 pm on Sunday to preside over the motion to remove Speaker Mohamed Nasheed as Deputy Speaker Eva had been absent.

  • Afeef annulled the declaraion of no-confidence in Nasheed raised by MDP, accepting the motion taken by The Democrats saying Nasheed’s case was filed illegally by MDP, and Afeef accepted the systemic motion taken by the Democrats, and concluded the session.

  • Afeef made the decision, according to the MDP and the parliamentary administration, against the advice of the Secretary General

Therefore, another hearing was held at 11:30 am and Nasheed's case was rescheduled. The parliament believes that the Speaker or substitute does not have the power to annul the resolution.

Sunday’s second session was presided over by Eva. Eva also decided that the impeachment motion could no longer be pursued as Afeef had decided.

Therefore, a meeting of the Privileges Committee was held this afternoon and the committee decided that Eva and Afeef had violated the privileges of the members.

This is the second time the MDP has started collecting signatures to remove Eva from office. Last May, the MDP withdrew its petition with 50 signatures after the first round of the presidential election results.

A motion of no confidence in the Deputy Speaker of Parliament can be signed by a not-less-than-one-fourth of the total number of members of Parliament or 22 members. The Deputy Speaker shall be removed from office by a majority of the members present and voting at the session of the parliament in which the resolution is passed.
