The newly started term of office will bring about a golden age of housing and land ownership to the people of the country, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said in his inaugural address on Friday.

President Muizzu was sworn in as the eighth president of Maldives at a ceremony at Republic Square Friday afternoon.

Addressing the nation for the first time after taking oath as president, Muizzu said land and housing are very sensitive issues in Maldives.

"It leads to family and social problems. It also leads to religious and moral problems. It also leads to many health problems," he said.

"Hopefully, a golden age of land and housing will be brought to the people in this new presidential term. Your new government will build a garland of state-of-the-art buildings and gardens from the Uthuru Thila Falhu to the Fushidhiggaru lagoon," he said.

The president said that many of the plans and works are already in documentary form.

"Soon, the beautiful vistas of modern new cities will rise from the lagoons," he said.

Further development of the Greater Male city area with a total of 65,000 houses and establishment of seven regional urban centres covering the north and south of the country is a presidential promise.
