The government's influence on the justice system is over from Friday, but that does not mean turning a blind eye to corruption, the newly appointed President of Maldives, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, said on Friday.
Muizzu said this in his inaugural speech as the eighth President of Maldives at a ceremony held at the Republic Square on Friday.
In his address, Muizzu said his government would ensure the independence of the three branches of government. In particular, he assured that the government would not exert “the slightest influence” on the judiciary.
"This does not mean that the government will turn a blind eye to those who commit such crimes. On the contrary, it means that the government will end its influence on the judiciary immediately," he said.
Former President and PPM President Abdulla Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in jail in an MMPRC fraud case. Muizzu has said during his presidential campaign that Yameen will be free in his government. That will only happen if the government stops influencing the judiciary, he said.
Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and former MMPRC Managing Director Abdullah Ziyath were pardoned last week and released by President Solih just days before the inauguration of Muizzu.
"Perhaps one of you is asking. What is the image and character of our government? I am here before you to answer that question," Muizzu said.
Answering the question, he said, "I will be just. I will not be unfair."
"We will say no to theft and corruption. The new government will take action against them. The two sides of the government will be seen. There will be no hiding or disguising," Muizzu said.
"With the good grace of Allah, hopefully, we will fulfill our promise. We will not be treasonous”.
In the same breath, he added:
"Our government will defend the holy religion of Islam, the country and the land. It will not be disrespectful. We will be builders. Our government, it will build the homes and minds of the people. It will not show empty dreams Hopefully, we will continue to be sincere in resolving the issue. Our government will say; smile at each other. Maintain relationships. Instil love, respect and mutual understanding throughout Maldives. Build a comfortable and pleasant Dhivehi society.”
