Parliament accepts Eva's no-confidence motion; serves notice
The motion was signed by 49 MDP MPs and independent MP, Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla.
Parliament has accepted the second no-confidence motion against deputy speaker Eva Abdulla and served the required 14-day notice to MPs.
The MDP Parliamentary Group (PG) had submitted a second no-confidence motion against deputy speaker Eva Abdulla with the signatures of 50 MPs last week.
The motion was signed by 49 MDP MPs and independent MP, Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla.
Parliamentary Secretary General Fatima Niusha informed MPs and Eva in a letter on Thursday that the motion had been accepted.
According to the rules of procedure, the Secretary General must give notice of the matter within a maximum of three days of receipt of the motion.
The deadline expired on Thursday. Niusha sent a letter to the MPs to serve the required 14-day notice.
According to MDP, the main reason for the motion is that Eva is "deliberately obstructing the proceedings in violation of the rules of procedure" to block the no-confidence motion against speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who is a relative of Eva.
A motion of no-confidence in the deputy speaker of parliament can be submitted with the signatures of one-fourth of the total number of MPs or not less than 22 MPs.
This is the second time the MDP has initiated the no-confidence proceedings against Eva. The MDP withdrew its motion, which had been filed in May with 50 signatures, after the first round of the presidential election on September 9.
Eva has drawn the ire of MDP members over her conduct during the no-confidence motion against Nasheed who has since resigned from the speakership.
