Maldivian foreign minister Moosa Zameer joined protesters on Monday in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The minister, who took the oath of office on Friday, joined the protesters who had gone to the foreign ministry after protesting outside the parliament.

Along with the protesters, the minister called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Answering questions from journalists, Zameer shared details of Maldives' response to the Israeli massacre in Palestine. As such, he said:

  • President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who was sworn in on Friday, has met with senior officials of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Palestinian ambassador and envoys of several other countries where he underscored the need for a ceasefire and ramp up the entry of aid into Gaza

  • In addition, Maldives has and will continue to call for a two-state solution, with a fully sovereign Palestinian state

However, the minister did not answer questions from journalists about a possible change in the Maldives' long-standing stance. He reiterated that Maldives current policy is the long-standing two-state solution.

At least 13,000 Palestinians have been killed and 30,000 injured by Israeli strikes across Gaza since 7 October, Gaza’s health ministry said on Sunday. Nearly 884,000 internally displaced persons were sheltering in 154 installations in Gaza run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, the agency said.

Maldives has seen protests calling for an end to Israeli aggression against Palestine, and to ban Israeli tourists.
