The Environment Ministry on Tuesday launched a programme called 'Magey Solar' to enable households to generate electricity from solar energy.

The programme aims to reduce the cost of electricity bills and reduce the use of oil-generated energy in Maldives, the Ministry said.

  • The programme was inaugurated by Minister Thorig Ibrahim at a ceremony held on Tuesday

  • The programme is planned to be implemented in collaboration with the government, utility companies and foreign donors

The first phase of the programme was launched on Tuesday. The solar PV generation system will be provided to households.

  • A total of three MW of solar PV systems will be provided to households under this phase

  • The tender for the supply of the three MW solar PV units has been opened on Tuesday

  • Under this measure, those who wish to install solar PV systems will be able to purchase solar PV systems through utility companies on an installment basis

  • These systems will be installed on a net metering basis

Although solar PV systems are long-lived, it will be difficult for the public to pay for such a system at once given the prices in the global market.

The programme, which was launched on Tuesday, is designed to alleviate such difficulties and provide payment in instalments so that the people can benefit from the installation of solar systems for a long time, the Environment Ministry said.
