SEZ proposals for renewable energy noteworthy, minister says

Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim has said that it is important to note that people have shown interest in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) investments.
With the opening of the SEZ for investment, Maldives got its first 110 MW renewable energy project.
In an exclusive interview with Atoll Times, Thorig said the proposal was submitted on the evening of the day when President Mohammed Muizzu inaugurated it.
"So now they have expressed interest and registered it. We are now holding meetings to decide the details. Hopefully it will not take too long," he said.
Thorig said the 110 MW project’s details, such as where, how or the capacity will have to be studied.
He said it was remarkable and important that people expressed interest in the SEZ for an environmentally friendly renewable energy project.
The proposal for the SEZ investment came after the COP-28 meeting attended by President Muizzu. This is the first investment in renewable energy received by a country since the meeting.
