The government has confirmed it will not publish a new list of recipients for flats under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme. Instead, flats currently under construction will be allocated based on the list announced by the previous administration on 15 November 2023.

The decision was announced at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Thursday. Minister of Housing, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, stated that the administration will uphold the permanent list finalised during the tenure of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Dr Muththalib clarified that no new list would be prepared. However, individuals found to be ineligible, or who fail to meet the eligibility criteria—such as not having resided in Malé for 15 years—will not receive flats. Residents who moved to Malé prior to 2007 will be considered continuous residents.

“There will be no new list,” Dr Muththalib said. “Only those found ineligible will have the opportunity to appeal. Others on the list will proceed with the process.”

The Gedhoruveriya scheme includes the construction of 4,000 flats. According to Dr Muththalib, 1,000 of these flats have been completed, though utility connections such as water and electricity are scheduled to be finalised by July. An additional 1,000 flats are expected to be completed by July, with full project completion targeted for September.

The allocation of flats will follow the existing order of the permanent list. Breakdown of the current list includes:

  • 391 couples both listed as recipients; only one individual per couple will receive a flat.

  • 302 individuals who already own housing in the city; flats will be granted upon transfer of their land to the government.

  • 305 individuals who received land under the landlord scheme and also appear on the list as flat recipients.

Dr Muththalib also stated that the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation, the state-owned company responsible for constructing the flats, has not accepted the agreements signed in the final days of the previous administration. As a result, the Housing Ministry will re-sign agreements with recipients on the permanent list.

“Following the holidays, the ministry will begin signing new agreements with those on the list starting next month,” Dr Muththalib said. “We expect recipients to begin moving into the completed flats in July.”
