The passport of former Housing Ministry State Minister Akram Kamaluddin has been re-seized under a new order issued by the Criminal Court on 21st of last month, in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation into the Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya housing schemes carried out during the previous government.

Akram confirmed the re-seizure of his passport and shared correspondence between himself and Prosecutor General (PG) Ahmed Muizzu Abbas on social media platform X.

On 29 April, the High Court overturned a previous Criminal Court order to seize Akram’s passport, stating that it had been issued in violation of judicial procedures. In a letter addressed to the Prosecutor General, Akram noted that since the PG’s office did not appeal the High Court's decision, the ruling had become final.

However, Akram's passport was again seized for a 30-day period under a new order based on the same grounds.

In his letter, Akram argued that the issuance of a new order following the High Court's decision, without an appeal, undermines the legal authority of the Prosecutor General. He requested that the PG either move the court to quash the new order or instruct the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to do so.

The Prosecutor General’s Office responded by stating that Akram had not presented sufficient grounds to seek cancellation of the current Criminal Court order. The office clarified that the High Court had only quashed a separate earlier order and that Akram retains the right to appeal the new order through legal channels. The response also noted that requests for temporary permission to travel abroad may be considered under special circumstances.

In his response on X, Akram criticised PG Abbas, stating that the reply to his letter demonstrated a lack of independence, and accused the Prosecutor General of acting under the influence of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Akram’s travel has been restricted since 21st of last month. The ACC confirmed Tuesday that it has forwarded chargesheets to the Prosecutor General’s Office against four individuals, including Akram, for alleged misuse of authority in the allocation of flats under the Gedhoruveriya scheme.
