Amr upset with President, Hassan Latheef meeting
The Democrats leadership has not commented on the matter.
Hussein Amr, whose unsuccessful bid for the Democrats president in the recent controversial internal elections, said Hassan Latheef, who won the election, should disclose the details of his meeting on Wednesday with President Mohamed Muizzu amid calls by the opposition for President Muizzu's impeachment.
Amr's remarks came as political leaders who met the president on Wednesday included Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef, who contested against Amr and won the Democrats presidency.
Other political figures that met the President on Wednesday:
-
JP Leader, Mamigili Constituency Member Gasim Ibrahim
-
Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) President, Dh. Meedhoo Constituency Member Ahmed Siyam Mohammed
-
Maldives National Party (MNP) President, Dhangethi Constituency Member Mohammed Nazim
After the separate meetings held at the President's Office on Wednesday, no details of the discussions were given.
However, some media outlets quoted the President's Office as saying that the political leaders assured the government of their cooperation during the meetings.
Expressing concern, Amr said in a post on 'X' on Wednesday that it is important that the details of the discussions held at the meetings are clear to the ordinary members of the parties and the people.
Some members of the public supported Amr's remarks. Some allege that Hassan Latheef has made “unknown deals” with President Muizzu.
The Democrats leadership has not commented on the matter.
Amr and Hassan Latheef contested The Democrats internal election earlier this month. Hassan Latheef won the controversial election by a margin of about 400 votes.
Amr, who was sacked as the Managing Director of STO in the last government, played a leading role in the formation of The Democrats. He was expected to contest the party’s presidential primary, but said he decided not to contest after considering the party's interests.
