Urbanco has banned entry to the uninhabited area of Hulhumale Phase II as mosquito-borne diseases are increasing and the place is swarming with mosquitoes.

Cases of the eradicated Filariasis were found in Kulhudhuffushi in the middle of this month during a screening camp conducted for foreign workers in the island.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has started testing for Filariasis in other parts of the country on the advice of the WHO.

The first Filariasis case in the city was reported last Friday, in the city of Hulhumale.

A total of seven cases of Filariasis have been reported in the Male area now, including five in Hulhumale.

Urbanco has repeatedly urged health workers to pay special attention to the unusually high number of mosquitoes in Hulhumale.

“Therefore, the enclosed area in Phase 2 of the Hulhumale area is covered with large trees and vines in vacant land besides construction works and the corporation urges those working in this area to pay extra attention,” Urbanco said in a statement on Tuesday.

Although the uninhabited area of Hulhumale Phase II is not open to the public, Urbanco said it rarely noticed the public entering the area and the corporation has repeatedly urged residents not to enter the area.

"Therefore, do not enter this area without permission and for any purpose," Urbanco said in the statement.

As a precautionary measure against Filariasis, Urbanco will start fogging Hulhumale in different zones from Tuesday:

  • 5 to 6 in the morning

  • 6 to 7 in the evening

Urbanco has advised people not to go outside during the fog hours unless absolutely necessary.
