A sea-ambulance service has been introduced between Male and Villimale to solve the difficulties of transporting patients in an emergency.

The service was launched at a special ceremony held in Villimale on Wednesday.

At the ceremony, an agreement was signed between Dharumavantha  Hospital and the Ministry of Health to provide sea ambulance services. The agreement was signed by:

  • Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Haleel

  • Dharumavantha Hospital CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem

In addition, Transport Minister Mohammed Ameen handed over the symbolic keys of the sea ambulance to the CEO of Dharumavantha Hospital.

The sea-ambulance for transporting patients between Male and Villimale:

  • Will be docked at the port of Villimale

  • The ambulance will be under the care of Villimale Hospital and IGMH

Speaking at the ceremony, Health Minister Haleel said the introduction of this service will greatly facilitate the transportation of patients between Villimale and Male.

“Fortunately, this island has got a better, bigger and more serviceable speedboat than the boats currently used as ambulances in Maldives,” he said.

The Minister added:

  • To further expand the sea-ambulance service, additional medical equipment will be installed on the speedboat

The minister also asked the people to share any difficulties they encounter in this service with the ministry. Therefore, the government will work closely with the people and find a quick solution to the problems of the people, he said.

The minister assured that the neglect of Villimale in previous governments would come to an end in this government.

The government has also decided to build a 100-bed hospital in the island to expand health services in Villimale. Dharumavantha Hospital CEO Haleem told the media that the relevant surveys are being conducted for the project now.
