Construction and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muthalib has said that the contractor is expected to spend USD 500-700 million (about MVR 10 billion) on the dredging of the Fushidhiggaru lagoon (Ras Male).

Sri Lanka’s Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCCC) has been awarded the dredging work. The government said it had awarded the contract to the company in exchange for land in Hulhumale and Fushidhiggaru.

Although there was no financial transaction in the project, the minister said the cost of the work would be at least USD 500-700 million.

"If you look at the cost, you can estimate it by area and by region. It's not a small cost. It will cost between USD 500 million and USD 700 million at least," Muthalib said.

He said this amount is the cost of dredging a one meter deep area.

“The price will depend on the depth of the site, the dredging, the amount of sand required and the area where the sand is taken,” Muthalib said.

The contract for the work was at risk and the company agreed to dredge the land after the state agreed to give it.

Ras Male is a project of this government to solve the housing problem. The project will be completed in 8 months, according to President Muizzu.
